The genealogy conference, “Preserving Our History/Creating Family Legacies” originally scheduled for Feb. 2 at the James E. Shepard Memorial Library at North Carolina Central University, has been canceled. A new date will be selected at a later time.

The conference is presented jointly by the NCCU Office of the Provost and the Friends of the James E. Shepard Memorial Library as part of the university’s observance of Black History Month.

 The conference will include workshops on such topics as researching slave and free ancestry, and preservation of African-American bible records. The conference starts at 9 a.m. and continues through lunch, where the keynote speaker will be Dr. Heather A. Williams, professor of history at UNC–Chapel Hill and author of “Help Me Find My People: The African-American Search for Family Lost in Slavery” (2012, UNC Press).
