Akua Matherson Appointed AVC, Administration & Finance

Akua Matherson, associate vice chancellor for Administration and Finance

Ms. Akua Johnson Matherson has been appointed as North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) associate vice chancellor for Administration and Finance effective March 1, 2018. Ms. Matherson’s appointment comes after a nationwide search.

Most recently, Ms. Matherson served as the director of Budgets and Financial Planning at NCCU. In her role as budget director, Ms. Matherson brought transparency and efficiency to the Budgets Office and Division of Administration and Finance. Under her leadership, the university has engaged in a comprehensive strategic budgeting process, university tuition and fee review and a more collaborative financial planning approach, involving Enrollment Management, Budgets and Institutional Planning and Research.

In her new role as associate vice chancellor, Ms. Matherson will serve as the principal deputy to the vice chancellor for Administration and Finance in developing and implementing key initiatives for the division and university, as well as serve as an advisor to the Chancellor’s Executive Leadership Team on a range of accounting, budget, financial and business operations. Additionally, she will have primary responsibility for the offices of Budgets and Financial Planning, Purchasing, Business and Auxiliary Services and the Comptroller’s Unit. Prior to joining NCCU, she served as the associate vice chancellor for Enrollment Management and assistant vice chancellor for Budget and Planning at North Carolina A&T State University. In addition to her 20 years of experience in higher education - with a background in finance, academic and student affairs - she previously served as a financial analyst for Union Pacific Railroad and US Airways.

Ms. Matherson is a native of Greensboro, N.C. She completed both her bachelor’s degree in economics and master’s degree in adult education from N.C. A&T State University.
