School of Education Plans 5K to Benefit Inter-Faith Food Shuttle

The North Carolina Central University School of Education will continue its commitment to community engagement when it hosts the Fill My Backpack 5K Run/Walk on Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. on the campus of NCCU.

Proceeds from the event will support the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Backpack Buddies Program. Each week during the school year, the program supplies more than 470 Durham County school-age children with backpacks of food for the weekend.  Each backpack contains six balanced meals and two snacks.

The run will begin at the Alfonso Elder Student Union and travel through campus toward Highway 55, before ending at the NCCU School of Education. During the race, participants will run/walk with a self-decorated backpack past 12 cheering stations, one every quarter-mile. NCCU cheerleaders, mascot Eddie the Eagle, the Marching Sound Machine, Greek-letter organizations and Durham Public Schools student organizations will participate in the cheering stations. NCCU is seeking 500 participants and 100 volunteers with a goal of raising $10,000 to be donated to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.

“As educators and future educators, we are striving now more than ever to partner with our surrounding communities to bring about the change we all want to see,” said Cheresa Clemons, assistant professor in the School of Education and the event organizer. “This event is an extension of our community engagement and service to local public schools. The NCCU School of Education is committed to assist in this cause.”

Partnering in this venture is SPORToften, an online community of businesses, organizations and individuals that have an interest in outdoor sports and recreation, active travel and community service.
