NCCU Renews Agreement with California Community Colleges

North Carolina Central University has renewed its educational partnership with the California Community College system to create a preferred pathway for students transferring into NCCU.

Through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) first established in 2015, NCCU and 34 other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) guarantee admission to graduates of the California Community College system that meet certain criteria.

“We are excited to see the California Community College agreement renewed for another year,” said NCCU Chancelor Johnson O. Akinleye. “It’s a way for us to streamline their application and acceptance process and send the message to talented California Community Colleges graduates that we welcome them to NCCU to continue their education.”

Other terms of the agreement include NCCU participation in a student recruitment caravan, which enables HBCUs to present their information to community college students from Sacramento south to Long Beach and Orange County and have recruitment materials available through the project office.

“Members of our team will be attending a variety of events throughout the year as presenters and participants which include transfer fairs, conferences, and workshops,” said project director Helen Young in a letter to NCCU and other partner universities.

Under the MOU, HBCUs agree to accept California Community Colleges students who have obtained junior standing or a transfer-level associate degree with a 2.5 or higher grade point average. Transfer scholarships have been developed to assist students with a 3.2 or higher GPA.
