Message from the Chancellor: Passing of an Eagle

Published: Monday, February 10, 2014

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the untimely passing of DeVonte Squire from Weldon, N.C., who died suddenly this evening. NCCU Police, along with local EMS personnel, responded immediately to a medical emergency call received on Lawson Street.

On behalf of the university community, I extend our deepest condolences and prayers of sympathy to DeVonte’s family and friends. A vigil or memorial service will be planned on campus. More information will be shared once it becomes available.

We recognize that this may be an emotionally stressful time for students, as well as faculty and staff. NCCU’s Student Health and Counseling Services are available for students in need of assistance. A counselor is available in Ruffin Hall. Students can also contact the NCCU Police Department at 919-530-6106 to be connected to an on-call counselor. Counseling Services will be open during their normal operating hours tomorrow, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Student Health Building, located on Eagle Campus Drive. Interested persons may call or simply walk in for assistance.

The loss of any member of our Eagle family is very difficult and I would ask that we come together and support one another in the hours, days and weeks to come.

In Truth and Service,

Chancellor Debra Saunders-White
