North Carolina Central University’s Student Government Association (SGA) and Alumni Relations Office will welcome former student leaders back to the campus for a reunion scheduled to coincide with the 23rd Annual NCCU Jazz Festival on April 19 and 20.
Former SGA presidents and vice presidents have been invited to a variety of events, including a reception on Friday evening, April 19, and a community service project in collaboration with NCCU students on Saturday morning, April 20, followed by a working lunch with current student leaders. They will also be guests at performances both days of the NCCU Jazz Festival.
Among the organizers is Kent Williams, SGA president during the 2008-09 academic year who now works at NCCU as a coordinator of the Centennial Scholars Program and is also completing a master’s degree in counseling.
“We wanted to invite previous student leaders back to show them how the campus has changed and to share their experiences with our current student leaders,” Williams said. “Student government leaders are the unsung heroes of the university. They advocate for students and serve as a liaison between students and administration. We want to help them be the best possible leaders.”
The jazz concerts on April 19 and 20 are the concluding performances of the Jazz Festival. Famed saxophonist Benny Golson will play on the 19th in a program that will also include performances by the NCCU Jazz Ensemble and the NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble. The headline group on April 20 is the Carl Allen Quartet.
