SYBEA is Revving up for the Best Summer Ever!

As summer nears NCCU School of Business prepares for the 7th annual Summer Youth Business and Entrepreneurship Academy (SYBEA).  SYBEA is a unique opportunity for high achieving students to participate in a real-world business and entrepreneurial environment.  This experience is awarded to 40 students from across the country.  This year the School of Business received nearly 130 applicants for consideration to the academy.  Some of the applicants originated from places as far as Massachusetts and Texas.

During this year’s one-week experience, students will engage in a variety of activities that include exposure to business disciplines such as marketing, finance and business strategy.  SYBEA Scholars will also participate in company site visits to learn more about the actual work that occurs in a range of businesses and industries.  Local entrepreneurs work directly with students to share their experiences and provide guidance for students interested in launching a startup business.

SYBEA is appreciative of the strong support it has received this year from Wells Fargo, BB&T, Maximus Foundation, and a number of individual contributors.  As reflected in this year’s academy theme the scholars will study rural areas in North Carolina and determine ways young innovators can drive the economy in these places through the use of technology and innovation.

“With nearly 50% of the academy participants originating from rural areas in North Carolina it brings us great joy to explore ways for our young scholars to give back to their own communities,” said Mrs. Keisha Williams, SYBEA Director, “to be able to support the growth and expansion of businesses in these areas through technology and innovation is of substantial importance”.

The students will be presented with a live case study from a business in Asheville called Poppy Gourmet Popcorn.  Through their association with Poppy they will be called upon to develop a way to monetize their digital presence and branding interface.   The academy begins on June 23rd and will conclude on June 30th.
