NCCU Jazz Program Shines at JEN 2013

Published: Monday, January 07, 2013

Students and faculty traveled to Atlanta, Georgia for the Jazz Education Network Annual Conference, January 2-5.  The NCCU Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Ira Wiggins, earned a standing ovation at their January 4 performance, which featured the great alto saxophonist Antonio Hart.  The concert included uniquely swinging interpretations of works by Oliver Nelson and Frank Foster, and provided room for outstanding playing from every section of the band. NCCU vocal professor Lenora Helm Hammonds delivered a well-received lecture on Synchronous and Asynchronous eLearning.  The presentation documented her innovative collaborative course connect NCCU students with cohorts in South Africa and Denmark.  It also featured a stellar performance with her ensemble of NCCU alumni and faculty. At the Conference’s finale concert, NCCU senior Lance Scott performed on the main stage with internationally recognized drummer Kobie Watkins.
