NCCU Appoints Director of Bands

Thurman D. Hollins

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has appointed Thurman D. Hollins as director of bands. Hollins has served in an interim role in the position since 2014.

As director, Hollins will continue to provide musical instruction and manage all aspects of the university band program, including marching and symphonic ensembles.

Before arriving at NCCU, Hollins served at St. Augustine’s University, where he guided the

Superior Sound Marching Band program to national prominence.

Previously, he was director of bands at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte. Hollins also has held various positions in education in Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia.

Hollins earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Norfolk State University and a Master of Music Education from Winthrop University.

He is a member of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) National Band Directors Consortium, the National Association for Music Education and the National Education Association.
