Alumnus Appointed to Durham County Government Post

Edmund Lewis Jr. ’08, has been named coordinator of Durham County’s My Brother’s Keeper program. In his new role, he will act as a liaison to organizations and agencies serving local youth.

Lewis began his career as a program associate for the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation. Lewis also served as a community support specialist for Brightmoor Alliance. During his time with Brightmoor, he assisted in obtaining $1.1 million to help fund community needs, managed 250 volunteers and received a $25,000 grant from the Michigan College Access Network.

In 2012, Lewis successfully launched Minority Males for Higher Education, a non-profit organization that provides tutoring and support for personal and educational achievement through mentoring. The organization’s main objective is to lower high-school dropout rates among male minority students while increasing college exposure.

Lewis graduated from NCCU with a bachelor’s degree in social work. He later continued his education obtaining a master’s in Policy Evaluations and Community Social Systems from Michigan State University. Lewis also completed coursework for the Non-Profit Senior Executives program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Executive Education in March 2017.
