North Carolina Central University Chief of Police Tim Bellamy announced that a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will arrive Nov. 18 to examine the NCCU Police Department's policy and procedure, management, operations and support services.
Verification that the department meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is a voluntary process. The accreditation is a highly prized recognition of professional excellence in law enforcement.
As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the Alfonso Elder Student Union.
If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by calling 919-530-5190 on Nov. 19 between 1 and 3 p.m.
Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. A copy of the standards is available at the NCCU Police Department.

Belinda Pounds serves as the accreditation program manager and can be reached at 919-530-5362. The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals and visit offices and other places where compliance can be witnessed. The assessors are Paul Willingham, chief, University of Houston – Clear Lake Police Department, Houston and Lt. Craig Stone, Columbus Division of Police, Columbus, Ohio.
Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the department, they report back to the full commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status.
Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
