NCCU Earns Top Ranking for Campus Safety

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has been named one of the safest college campuses in the nation by Alarms.org, the official website for the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

Out of the 500 campuses appearing on the site’s “The Safest Colleges in America” list, NCCU ranked in the top 60th percentile of campuses receiving this accolade. In the state of N.C., NCCU was ranked among the top 15 safest campuses. The institution was also noted as the third-safest HBCU in the state.

To determine the rankings, the website examined safety scores based on FBI crime data, reports from local law enforcement and police adequacy.

“North Carolina Central University is committed to providing a safe experience for students, employees, alumni and all who frequent our campus, said Fred Hammett, NCCU police chief. “This accolade further showcases the success of the security measures, resources and tools that we have implemented in our community.”

The campus boasts a Department of Police and Public Safety with full law enforcement accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), the body that also accredits municipal and state law enforcement agencies, among others. NCCU Police are professionally trained and certified by the state of N.C., with the same authority and right to bear arms and arrest as any law enforcement officer in the state.

Most recently, NCCU invested more than $3 million in a project that has enhanced campus safety. The projected included the installation of approximately access-controlled doors, surveillance cameras inside buildings and across the grounds, as well as an integrated security system. NCCU Police also hold full scale trainings to enhance the ability of the campus to respond to major crises.

Founded in 2006, the National Council for Home Safety and Security aims to further consumer education and information with a focus on home security, home safety, child safety and senior safety.
