As a part of the Division of Student Affairs, the Department of Residential Life at North Carolina Central University houses roughly 2,800 full-time undergraduate and graduate students in 12 residential facilities.

Position Overview

The Desk Assistant serves as the first point of contact for residents, visitors, staff, and faculty at NCCU.  Therefore, the DA often sets the tone for the experience of these stakeholders.  Desk Assistants are expected to assist with a wide variety of tasks that center on customer service and creating a warm and welcoming environment for campus community members.

Position Qualifications

  • Submit a completed application with resume.  Due to the nature of student employment, applications are accepted on a rolling basis.  You may be contacted if/when a position opens.
  • Be enrolled at NCCU as a full-time student.
  • Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher.
  • Have no record of University disciplinary action at the time of application of appointment.
  • Willingness to comply with office attire policies. Specifics regarding what is deemed appropriate is at the discretion of each supervisor. (i.e. no shorts, obscene, paraphernalia, crop tops, etc.)
  • Be able to attend Fall and Spring semester trainings.
  • Be able to work a minimum of 10 hours per week
  • Have the ability to work during regular business hours (between 8:00 am-5:00 pm)
  • Willingness to work during university holidays, if needed.
  • Possess a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
  • Ability to provide the highest level of customer service in fast-paced and demanding environment
  • Consent to sign the confidentiality agreement
  • Possess Excellent verbal and Written Communication Skills

Preferred candidates will possess the following:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • Database Management Systems
  • Proven ability to multitask
  • Paid customer service experience
  • Interpersonal skills that will foster a positive work environment, team work, and productivity
  • Excellent web navigation/research abilities
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as needed
  • Positive and engaging demeanor when interacting with department clients

General Responsibilities:

  • Perform check-in's and check-out's for residential students
  • Provide assistance to walk in visitors regarding housing policies, procedures, etc. and/or direct them to appropriate staff
  • Retrieve and input data into housing software
  • Assist with clerical responsibilities including, but not limited to, answering phones, making copies, filing, and scanning documents
  • Assist in maintaining safety and security of the residence halls
  • Maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA each semester.
  • Remain in good standing in regards to NCCU community standards
  • Refrain from use of personal technology (laptop, cellular phone, etc.) while working the desk
  • Maintain a clean and orderly workspace
  • Wear, and keep washed, departmental polo or jacket throughout shift
  • Complete all other duties assigned

 

Duration of Employment

This position is being phased out after the Spring 2017 semester, therefore the duration of this appointment will end as of Saturday May 13th, 2017.
