The Director holds the rank of Chief of Police. The Director is responsible for the development, implementation, supervision and evaluation of a proactive Campus Police Department that provides comprehensive public safety to the students, faculty, staff, and community, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Two assistants aid in the day-to-day operation of the department: Field Operations Division Commander (Captain) and Administrative Division Commander (Captain).
The Administrative Division Commander has day-to-day responsibility for the security and some operations provided by the department. The Commander provides direct supervision of the following sections:
Operations: This section encompasses internal investigations, budgeting, recruitment, property/supplies, technology, updating all departmental policies, parking services and standard operating procedures.
Communications: Communications is comprised of six telecommunicators and is responsible for all emergency dispatch duties for the Department. The positions within this section are not sworn law enforcement officers. The emergency communications center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and is the first point of contact during an emergency on campus. To handle emergency calls the center is equipped with Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, 800 MHz radio system, Typewriter (TTY) Telephone system for hearing impaired. NCCU Police telecommunicators are State certified by the North Carolina Sheriff's Education and Training Standards Commission.
Training: This section is responsible for coordinating all mandatory and elective training for the Department's sworn and non-sworn personnel.
The Field Operations Division Commander has day-to-day responsibility for law enforcement provided to the University community 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
Uniformed Patrol: Patrol is comprised of four Teams A, B, C, and D, that work 12-hour rotating shifts with two squads working each day, either day or night shift. Each Team is assigned a Lieutenant (Watch Commander), a Sergeant field supervisor and a number of officers, providing sworn law enforcement services. We have Police Officers on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Police Officers are assigned to patrol the campus on foot, in patrol vehicles, on bicycles, Segways, and golf carts. Our officers are equipped and certified through in-service training to use defibrillators, first aid kits, and jump boxes.
Security: This section is comprised of one sworn police officer and 18 security officers. This section is responsible for the security of the Residence Halls, Shepard Library, Law School, Science Complex, BBRI and the Administrative Parking Booth. Security officers assigned to work at the University Residence Halls work an 8-hour shift during the evening. Security officers assigned to Traffic Enforcement, the Administrative Parking Booth, and Shepard Library work an 8-hour shift during the day, Monday through Friday. Security officers assigned to the Law School, Science Complex, BBRI, and West Security Booth work an 8-hour shift from 4 p.m. to 12 midnight. Security Officers patrol on foot, in patrol vehicles, on bicycle, Segway, and golf cart.
Criminal Investigation: The section is available 24 hours a day, with on-call personnel. This section is responsible for the investigation of all felonious offenses committed on University property.
Crime Prevention: This section is responsible for the presentation of violence prevention outreach programs to the University community including: Self Defense Classes; Date Rape Seminars; Crime Prevention Fairs and other outreach programs as required or requested.
