Lamon Lawhorn is an Assistant Band Director at North Carolina Central University. His duties within the Department of Music include the oversight of Marching Percussion, conducting the Marching Sound Machine Percussion Ensemble, and providing additional private lesson instruction.
Mr. Lawhorn, a native of Fort Worth, TX, graduated from Eastern Hills HS where he now has a percussion award named in his honor. He received his Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education from Prairie View A&M University, where he studied under Professor Larry Jones. While attending Prairie View A&M, Mr. Lawhorn was a member of the Marching Storm, Principal Percussionist in the University Symphonic Band, Principal Marimbist for the University Marimba Ensemble, and also served as Student Conductor for the University Symphonic Band. Upon graduation, Mr. Lawhorn attended the University of Mississippi where he received his Master of Music Degree in Percussion Performance and was a Percussion Graduate Assistant of Professor Ricky Burkhead. While at Ole Miss, he was the Principal Percussionist for in the UM Wind Ensemble, and Drummer for both the Mississippians Jazz and UM Steel Drum Ensembles. In 2008, he won the UM Department of Music Concerto Competition with his performance of the Paul Creston Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra becoming the first African-American and percussionist to win the competition. Mr. Lawhorn is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in Percussion Performance, and is a student of Dr. Kristopher Keeton.
Mr. Lawhorn has performed in several orchestral venues including Principal Percussionist for the L-O-U Symphony Orchestra, Corinth Symphony Orchestra, served as Artist in Residence at the FWISD Creative and Performing Arts Summer Music Camp, and performed in many other theatre productions. On Drumset, Mr. Lawhorn has performed with recording artist Matt MaGill, Marcel Anderson,Howlin 19 Madd Bill Perry, R.A. Hall, The Damnwells, The George Tisdale Band, Colandra McDowell, and the Inner City All-Stars Brass Band.
Mr. Lawhorn is a member of the Percussive Arts Society where he serves as a member of the Drumset Committee, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and Drummers for Jesus. Mr. Lawhorn is an endorsee of Remo Drumheads, Beato Drum Bags, and Vic Firth Sticks where he is a member of the Vic Firth Collegiate Educator Program. He is happily married to Mrs. Sheena R. Lawhorn
