Dr. Calhoun is the Program Director for the Galaxo Smith Kline Foundation grant to increase the number of students graduating from majors in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). From 2009 to 2011 she served as Interim Director for the NCCU JLC Biomedical, Biotechnology Research Institute and as Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development. Dr. Calhoun retired from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland as the Deputy Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. She has received numerous award for her work in increasing grant funding and in working to increase the number of minority students involved in research. During her career at NIH, she served as the Deputy Chief for Review of the then Division of Research Grants (currently the Center for Scientific Review).
