Dr. Elmira Mangum
AN EAGLE LEADS THE RATTLER NATION

NCCU alumna Dr. Elmira Mangum has been appointed the first permanent female president of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fl.

When asked if she was a FAMU graduate by Roland Martin on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, she said, “I’m absolutely not!  I’m an Eagle. I’m a graduate of North Carolina Central University.”

Mangum graduated from NCCU with her Bachelor of Science in geography in 1974. Although she received dual master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, she identifies Durham as her academic home.

We are delighted to claim her, too.  She takes the helm of FAMU having served as vice president for planning and budget at Cornell University in upstate New York.  She also served as senior associate provost at UNC–Chapel Hill, in charge of budget and resource management for all centers, institutes, colleges and schools.

In a letter to the FAMU Presidential Search Committee, Mangum wrote, “I received my foundation in a liberal arts education and inspiration for service at North Carolina Central University.”
