CIO's Desk

Welcome to NCCU’s Information Technology Services (ITS) website. I am John N. Smith, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at NCCU, my Alma Mater.  I joined the NCCU ITS team in July of 2009. Before taking on the incredible task of leading Information Technology Services, I served as interim Executive Director of the UNC Shared Services Alliance at the UNC General Administration (GA). During my time there I oversaw many of the technical services the Alliance provides to campuses within the UNC system including NCCU.  In addition, I also managed many of the efforts that were initiated by the Board of Directors for the Shared Services Alliance.  Before joining GA, I worked as the CIO at Elizabeth City State University for 11 years where I later retired. In 1996, I retired from IBM with 30 years of service. 
As a proud alumnus of NCCU, I have had the pleasure of serving as president of the Durham Chapter of the NCCU Alumni Association, Executive Director of the NCCU Educational Advancement Foundation (Eagles Club), the Foundation Board, and as a member of the NCCU Board of Trustees.  As a person who is highly vested in the best interest of NCCU, I want to ensure that the ITS website serves as a central location for students, faculty and staff to:

• gain an overview of Information Technology at NCCU, our goal and objectives
• view the campus IT policies and procedures,
• read our division initiatives,
• and to learn about our staff members
