Meet the Director
Karen Keaton Jackson Head shotDr. Karen Keaton Jackson came to North Carolina Central University as an assistant professor of English in August 2004. She received her B.S. in English Secondary Education from Hampton University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric from Wayne State University. As a graduate student, she taught courses in African-American literature, multicultural literacy, and helped to develop a community based service-learning course. Her recent publications include “The Compositionist as ‘Other’: A Critical Self-Reflection of an Instructor of Color in an Urban Service-Learning Classroom” in the edited collection Social Change in Diverse Teaching Contexts: Touchy Subjects and Routine Practices.

In the fall of 2005, she took over as director of the Writing and Speaking Studio. During her short tenure as director, she changed the name of the Writing Center to the Writing and Speaking Studio to improve the image of the space where students can receive help with their writing. Her new area of research is focused on the Writing and Speaking Studio as she explores the relationship between writing tutorials and student retention and success. She also is an elected board member of the Southeastern Writing Center Association, which serves over eight states in the southern United States.

"I am extremely proud to be the director of the Writing and Speaking Studio. I've worked hard to spread the word about who we are and what we do. Our main goal is to let students know that we are here because we care and we want them to become better writers."
