What is SMASSS?

SMASSS, one of the programs of the Center for Science, Math and Technology Education at North Carolina Central University, is a three year continuous science and math enhancement program consisting of a summer camp and school year Saturday Academies. It provides creative science enrichment for 8th through 10th grade students, with an interest in science, and whom teachers have identified as having high potential with some added support.

Students accepted as 8th graders for the 2009 summer camp and Saturday Academy have the opportunity to remain in SMASSS for an additional two years (Summer 2009 – school year 2011-2012).

The long-term goal of the SMASSS program is to increase the number of students who are both interested and competitively prepared to pursue college studies and subsequently enter careers in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) area.

What are the Goals of SMASSS?

  • To stimulate curiosity about science.
  • To provide a foundation for understanding science and math.
  • To ensure a comprehension of content, analytical and critical thinking capabilities to succeed and excel in the upper level of high school and, subsequently college.

Who are the Participants?

  • Rising eighth grade students from Durham public Middle Schools

The Camp Experience

Selected students will participate in a three-week full day (8:30 AM 3:00 PM) camp at NCCU. Mornings will consist of dynamic, interactive, technology driven modules in life sciences, physical sciences and math/computer sciences. Following lunch (which is provided), students will have afternoons for reinforcement tutorials, fun competitions, and outdoor activities.
