What is FERPA?

FERPA stands for the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act.  It limits the access of educational records by outside sources unless student consent is provided.New students are given an academic syllabus that includes a FERPA release. When signed by the student and academic advisor, the release permits advisors to speak with parents and/or other family members about a student’s academic progress. The FERPA release is retained in the student’s advising file.
