Admissions Overview

Requirements for Admission

  1. Bachelor's degree
  2. Typically a B average in the undergraduate major and a generally strong academic record
  3. Strong verbal and quantitative scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE & LSAT scores should be within the past five years)-Required for admission into the traditional MPA track 
  4. Successful interview with an admissions committee-Required for admission into the Executive MPA track

The MPA Program is offered in two formats:

  • On-campus for traditional track MPA students 
  • On-campus and online for Executive track MPA students. Students complete their coursework online via Blackboard one weekend per month

Apply online here. MPA at North Carolina Central University offers students two start dates per calendar year:

  • MPA traditional track-August
  • Executive MPA track-May

  • Most recent resume or CV
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • One unofficial transcript from each university attended must be uploaded within the application. Official transcripts for each university attended must be sent to the School of Graduate Studies at North Carolina Central University, 123-A Taylor Education Building, Durham, NC 27707
  • Application fee (either online during the application process or by check through the mail)
  • Official GRE scores fewer than five years old (These scores are only required for admission into the Traditional MPA program. (GRE scores are not required for admission into the Executive MPA program)
  • GMAT and LSAT scores fewer than five years old may be submitted for consideration in lieu of GRE scores
  • Statement of Purpose

Each applicant is required to submit a statement of purpose, usually one to two pages in length, responding to the question, "Why do you want to earn an MPA from North Carolina Central University?" In your statement, please address the following:

  • Your professional goals
  • Experiences that have led you to consider a public service career
  • Why the MPA program at North Carolina Central University would be a good fit for you
