The Psychology Summer 2012 Comprehensive Written Examination will be administered in the beginning of the Fall 2012 Semester rather than in the Summer 2012. The new date for the administration will be in October. This new plan will allow students additional time to study for the examination. The department will not offer comprehensive exams during the summer. The department will still continue to administer the exam in November 2012 (as usual), Spring 2013, and November 2013, but not in Summer 2013 and October 2013. The rationale behind the new policy is to align the department with the legal, contractual agreement for faculty. More specifically, most faculty members are 9-month employees and thus, their contractual appointment with the department ends in May. In view of the 9-month (Fall and Spring) employment contract arrangement for most Faculty, it seems reasonable to administer the examination during this time period only so that the department can adhere to the contractual agreement. Moreover, given the examination has been administered in the department in the Summer, scoring of that examination has often occurred in the Fall and notifying students occurred in the Fall, these prior practices also influenced the decision to change the administration of the examination. I want to acknowledge Dr. Goldman’s diligence for drafting an earlier e-mail with this information.
