Letter from the Chair

Psychology Students,

It is indeed a pleasure to welcome you, not only to the department, but to one of the most fascinating, engaging and exciting areas of study, and the field of Psychology. Through your studies in the various courses offered in the department, you will find that there is not an aspect of daily life that psychology does not touch. Understanding how we behave, grow and develop, learn, think, perceive, remember, feel, understand and interact with one another are all areas in which psychologists have made significant contributions.

Our graduates have gone on to pursue graduate and professional degrees at some of the most prestigious universities in the country. Others have joined the workforce upon graduation and are making their mark in various companies and organizations both regionally and nationally. Your education will be enhanced by performing well in your courses and through involvement in organizations such as the Nixon-Thorpe Psychology Club, Psi Chi Honor Society and research opportunities with faculty. Whatever your career goal, know that you will be provided the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve it.

Your choice to major in Psychology indicates a willingness to work hard and meet the academic standards as set forth by the university. You will find the academic policies of the university and other important information about course requirements, advising, etc., in the departmental handbook which can be found on this website. Additionally, as a Psychology major, you will be expected to exhibit a high degree of professionalism and socially appropriate behavior when interacting and communicating with faculty and fellow students, both in and outside of the classroom. As a Psychology major you are the best and the brightest, and this must be evident not only in your classwork but in your behavior and demeanor as you traverse the “rolling hills and verdant green.”

We invite you to begin your journey in Psychology with those of us who have made it out life’s work to more thoroughly understand and improve the human condition. I am confident that you will find the journey both challenging and stimulating. It is our mission, delight and honor to help you along the way.

Eagle Pride Amplified!
