The degree in Family and Consumer Sciences offers three areas of specialization; Child Development and Family Relations, Foods and Nutrition, and Textiles and Apparel.
The program of study in Child Development and Family Relations prepares students for working effectively with individuals and families in a variety of contexts. The students gain experience in the analysis and application of theories with implications for life span development.
The specialization in Foods and Nutrition offers a concentration in Dietetics with supporting courses in biology, chemistry, and business. The Dietetics program is accredited by the Accredited Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606, 1-800-877-1600. Students who successfully complete the program become eligible to apply for dietetic internship programs. Students completing four years in dietetics can work in health departments, WIC, food research, food production agencies, etc.
The Textiles and Apparel program of study offers a concentration in Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design. The curriculum focuses on principles of design, management, science, technology, and consumer behavior. Diversity and an interdisciplinary approach to learning expose students to current trends and technologies used in designing, evaluating, and merchandising products. Additionally, students benefit from close interactions with the faculty and industry through internships, field trips, juried design competitions, apparel and furniture markets, trade shows, service learning projects and other extracurricular experiences.
Fashion Inc is a pre-professional student organization in the Textiles and Apparel area. Membership is open to non-Textiles and Apparel majors throughout the campus who are also interested in the fashion industry. Fashion Inc sponsors an annual design competition fashion show. Members plan and implement an event where junior and senior level students create a collection of garments that are presented to the public after the garments have been judged by industry professionals to determine the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. This organization also helps students develop better interpersonal relationships and build leadership skills.
Sew Uniquee is the apparel alteration lab that is operated by Textiles and Apparel majors and others students that take classes in the area. The students perform common garment alterations and repairs. Patrons make a nominal donation which is used to replenish notions, supplies, and equipment.
A major in Textiles and Apparel prepares student to pursue careers in textile design, product development, fashion merchandising, visual merchandising, retail sales, advertising, consumer relations, fashion buying, patternmaking, fashion illustration, and many more.
The degree in Birth Through Kindergarten (B-K) Teacher Education prepares students for teacher licensure and a teaching career with children from birth through five years in inclusive settings serving both typically and atypically developing young children and their families. In addition to the areas identified for Child Development and Family Relations, students successfully completing the program may seek employment in public school classrooms, private preschools and kindergartens, home-based early intervention programs, Head Start, developmental day programs, and a variety of child care centers and programs. This program is delivered through an online format as well as face-to-face.
The degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education prepares students for teacher licensure and a teaching career in middle and high school family and consumer sciences programs. Students will complete courses in Child Development and Family Relations, Foods and Nutrition, and Textiles and Apparel.
The Dietetic Internship Program at NCCU is fully accredited by the Accredited Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606, 1-800-877-1600. This is a specialized accreditation body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of Education. The program provides the supervised practice hours required to meet the performance standard for entry-level dietitians.
