GRITS Center

GIS Research & Innovative Teaching Service Center (GRITS)

GRITS Goals
The Geospatial Research, Innovative Teaching and Service Center (GRITS) seeks to establish a dynamic educational alliance among various colleges and schools of the North Carolina Central University with the goal of increasing the number of knowledgeable and motivated students at NCCU pursuing and attaining careers in geospatial science, as well as teachers to guide them. As our university moves aggressively forward with the development of new and relevant academic programs and as the research base increases, we must have a student population ready to capitalize on these initiatives. The GRITS center is one such cog in the College of Science and Technology.

GRITS History
The GRITS Center was established in fall 2006 by four faculty members, Drs. Albert Barnett, Jasper Harris, Rakesh Malhotra, and Gordana Vlahovic, from the Department of Environmental, Earth, and Geospatial Sciences, with the goal of energizing student instruction, faculty development, and increasing interest for geospatial research on the NCCU campus. In the first two years the operation of the GRITS Center will be supported, in addition to university funds, through two educational grants from NSF-GEO ED and NSF-HRD directorates.
