Seismic Station

North Carolina Central University now has on it’s campus a high quality broadband seismic station operated by the Department of Environmental, Earth and Geospatial Sciences (DEEGS). The station was installed during the September and October of 2006 by EEGS faculty and students and with the help of Mr. John Parker, seismic network technician from Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI) in Memphis, TN, and Mr. Tuy Tran and his crew from Physical Plant. This installation makes NCCU the only university in North Carolina that collects seismic data routinely included in the Advanced National Seismic System data processing infrastructure. The science education is significantly enhanced through the use of seismographs and seismic data in the classroom. The data collected by the NCCU seismic station will be used to introduce concepts of plate tectonics, earthquakes, geohazards, mountain building and others in the Physical Geography, Earth Science and Geology courses. Real time display of NCCU seismic data can be accessed online (follow the link to NCCU SeismicData).

These pages are designed and updated by NCCU students. Follow the links on this site to learn more about the people behind the NCCU Seismic Station Project, student and faculty research projects and earth and physical science programs at the NCCU.

People Involved

Gordana Vlahovic is Visiting Assistant Professor in the EEGS Department. She received undergraduate degree in Physics from University of Zagreb, Croatia, and PhD in Geology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research interests are centered on sesimotectonics, geohazards analysis using GIS and innovative methods of geoscience education. Recently she has been involved with establishing GIS Research, Innovative Teaching and Service (GRITS) Center on NCCU campus and with development of Provisional ASPRS GIS Certification Program.

Lloyd Edwards is an NCCU honor student majoring Geography major with concentrations in Earth Science and Geographical Information Systems. Lloyd has an Associate of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He retired from the U. S. Geological Survey NC Water Resources division with twenty-three years experience in ground water, surface water and water quality analysis. His last ten years with USGS he spent working as the leader on federal and state projects involving digital data development. After graduation in May 2006, Lloyd plans to enroll in graduate school and pursue research focusing on spatial data analysis and modeling.

Lloyd helped with the installation of the seismic station and during the summer of 2006 worked with HAZUS software. Read More > HAZUS

Clarisse Steans is a Physics major from Macon, Georgia. This fall she is also enrolled at Georgia Institute of Technology (GIT) completing the first of the three years of the NCCU-GIT Dual Degree program (students completing this program receive degrees from both institutions). In addition to beingChancellor's Scholar Clarisse is also a star athlete. She helped NCCU win its first conference softball championship since 1999 and secured the team's first ever NCAA playoff appearance. She worked during the spring and summer of 2006 on collection and analysis of data related to the offering of Earth Science programs at North Carolina HBCUs and other schools in UNC system.
