BSN

BSN    Curriculum

BSN Curriculum

The traditional nursing curriculum is offered for qualified high school graduates, transfer and second degree students and licensed practical nurses. The nursing curriculum is divided into a lower division and an upper division, each of which is two years for traditional students. The lower division courses provide knowledge in natural and social sciences with a liberal arts focus. The upper division courses are in the nursing major. Completion of 56 hours is required to obtain junior status for admission to upper division. All students must successfully complete three pre-nursing courses prior to admission to the upper division.

RN to BSN

RNBSN Curriculum

BSN Curriculum

The RN to BSN curriculum is web-enhanced for registered nurses licensed to practice nursing. Nursing courses are offered online to facilitate distance learning. While courses are available via the internet, several opportunities to visit the campus are available. Students in the RN-BSN curriculum matriculate into the upper division after only one year.A variety of health care facilities are used throughout the state to provide clinical experiences including hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities and health departments in Durham, Wake, Orange, Chatham, Person, Vance-Granville and Franklin counties.

Application Procedure for Upper Division

Currently enrolled NCCU students

Currently enrolled NCCU students who qualify to apply for admission to the UPPER DIVISION in the Department of Nursing should:

  • Submit an application to the Department of Nursing by the established deadline preceding the semester in which admission is sought.
  • Submit a current physical examination (completed within the past year), which includes an assessment of physical and mental health, a record of immunizations including Hepatitis B vaccine and Varicella, a Tuberculin Skin Test (an annual requirement), and disclosure of medical problems that require accommodation or special arrangements.
  • Applications are screened for admission by the Recruitment, Admission, Progression, and Retention Committee (RAPR).

Note: THE APPLICANT IS NOTIFIED OF THE DECISION IN WRITING.

Transfer Applicants

Transfer applicants must submit two applications: the online university undergraduate transfer application available through the university Admissions office at www.nccu.edu and the Nursing major paper application. Please note that the University application is separate from the Nursing major application and no documents or transcripts are shared by the University Undergraduate Admission Office and the Department of Nursing. At least four to six weeks prior to the Nursing application deadline, transfer applicants should first apply to the University as a transfer student. Upon acceptance to the University, applicants are issued an 820 number (PIN#) which must be used on the Nursing application. Please note that the number of transfer spaces is limited, and admission to NCCU is a pre-condition for admission to the Nursing major.

The university Office of Undergraduate Admissions requires applicants to submit official transcripts and OSSS also requires official transcripts in support of the Nursing major application. Do not have your official transcripts sent to the OSSS, you must attach the transcripts to the Nursing major application. It is your responsibility to be sure that all transcripts are received by the OSSS.

RN Applicants

RN-BSN students are required to have a current and unrestricted RN Licensure for the state of practice. License will be verified. It is a requirement of registration for each semester.

All Applicants

Incomplete Nursing applications, including those submitted without 820 (PIN) numbers will not be processed, and applications are evaluated only after all required documents have been received. During the application process, the OSSS will communicate with applicants via email, thus it is important that your University email address is printed legibly. Following receipt of the application, we will send an email confirmation that the application has been received. Please allow 3-4 weeks following submission of your application to receive the initial confirmation of receipt. If support documentation is missing from the application package, applicants will be contacted ONCE by email and given two weeks to submit the required documents. In 2009, applicants will be notified by mid-July of their admission decisions by U.S. Mail. Thereafter, applicants will be notified by mid-June of their admission decisions by U.S. Mail.

Please note: Admission to the University through the University Undergraduate Admissions Office DOES NOT guarantee admission to the Nursing major. Nursing major decisions are independent of the University admission decision process and are mailed separately.

Once a student has received verification of admission into the Upper Division of the Nursing Program, the student must provide the following documentation for the fall semester of the Junior year or the first semester in Upper Division and each academic year there afterwards:

1. Current immunizations and Hepatitis B vaccination or waiver. This is a repeat since they have to submit the immunizations as part of the admission packet

2. Documented criminal background check by the third party vendor selected by the University.

3. Basic Life Support Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation certification (American Heart Association, CPR for Healthcare Providers).

All admissions are contingent upon the student maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.5, completing all program requirements with grades of 2.5 or better, and presenting current evidence of malpractice (liability) insurance, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (American Heart Association, CPR for Healthcare Professionals), physical/mental health evaluation, background check, current immunizations and current nursing license, if applicable.

The Department of Nursing at NCCU reserves the right to modify this information. Students are advised to consult a Nursing Advisor to maintain currency with Departmental requirements. The Department of Nursing will make every effort to notify currently enrolled Pre- nursing majors of any changes in admission requirements. Students should keep the Department informed of their current address.

The Department will not discriminate on the basis of race, national origin, religion, creed, sex, age, or disability in either the selection of students for participation in the educational program, or as to any aspects of the clinical training; provided, however, that with respect to disability, the disability must not be such as would, with reasonable accommodation, in and of itself preclude the student's effective participation in the educational program.

*   Non-registered Nurses. This student is not a Licensed Registered Nurse.

NCCU NURSING MAJOR STUDENTS

Registration

The Department of Nursing registers courses each semester for students classified as one of the following:

  • Second Semester Sophomores who are eligible to register for bridge courses.
  • Transfer students who have been releases by the University College
  • Second degree (Bachelor Degree) students for.
  • Students Readmitted to the University

An alternate PIN (Personal Identification Number) is required to complete registration on Banner. Alternate PINs are not given to students majoring in Nursing. Therefore, each student MUST come to the Office of Student Support Services to register for classes.  STUDENTS ARE NOT TO PRE-REGISTER OR REGISTER FOR CLASSES WITHOUT PRIOR CONSULTATION WITH NURSING ADVISORS. Students still remain responsible for completing the curriculum as planned and should be aware of the contents in their transcripts.

When registering for fall, spring and summer semesters, students are encouraged to take advantage of pre-registration periods prior to the end of the currently enrolled semester. This will alleviate problems that students incur when classes are unavailable or full.

Advisement session times vary, and for many faculty and counselors, are based on first come/ first serve. You should call your advisor's office prior to coming to the office for verification of the advisor's availability on your desired date.

Pre-approval of transfer course(s), pre-approval of Upper Division coursework, Web Distance Learning, drop/add and withdrawal forms need to be approved by your advisors during the designated period noted on the North Carolina Central University's Academic Calendar.

Nursing Student- Defined

An applicant who is offered admission to a degree program is expected to enroll for the semester indicated in the letter of acceptance. All students must register on the dates given in the Academic Calendar. Pre-registration dates are given for students already in residence. Any student who fails to register at the proper time incurs a late fee penalty. Application documents are held for one year following the semester for which applications was made. Applicants who wish to reactivate after the year has elapsed will need to submit new application forms as well as necessary support documents.

BSN Course Load

A minimum of twelve (12) credit hours per semester is required for full-time status. Students wishing to take fewer than twelve (12) credit hours, or more than eighteen credit hours, per semester may do so only with approval of the Department Chair.
