Department of History
The Department of History will honor the University's Centennial Celebration by conducting a series of programs that will feature graduates of the Department / University.
Sunday, October 18, 2009 NCCU alumnus Dr. Stephanie Shaw, professor of History at The Ohio State University, will deliver the Earlie Thorpe Lecture at Historic Stagville. The program will begin at 2:00 p.m.
On Friday, November 13, 2009 NCCU alumnus Dr. Arwin Smallwood, professor of History at Memphis State University, will deliver the Department of History's David W. Bishop Lecture. The program will start at 12 Noon in the Alfonso Elder Student Union.
During the Month of February 2010 the University will celebrate Black History Month. The 2010 theme is The History of Black Economic Empowerment. The University's program will highlight North Carolina Central University's role in the economic development of the Black community in Durham during the last 100 years.
During the month of March 2010 the Department of History will acknowledge Women's History Month by celebrating the contribution of women to the development and growth of NCCU during the last 100 years.
March 20-21, 2010 the Department of History will sponsor the second annual African Diaspora Studies Symposium. The theme will be Uncovering Lost Perspectives: History and Representation.
The Department of History's culminating Centennial event will take place April 9-10, 2010. The Department will invite back to campus for a symposium and recognition banquet former students of Dr. Helen G. Edmonds. In 1977 the first Helen G. Edmonds Colloquium was held at NCCU. The Colloquium consisted of students of Dr. Edmonds. In April 2010 we will bring these scholars back to campus to recognize their contribution to historical studies and conduct conversations with our current students about the life and legacy of Dr. Edmonds and the role NCCU has played in shaping the historical profession.
