
The National theme for Black History Month 2009 and the remainder of the year is "Quest for Black Citizenship in the Americas." The History Department led the University in this year's celebration. Dozens of activities were planned for the entire month, including, presentations by students and faculty, video presentations, a drama production, and musical performances. Lonnie King, noted civil rights activist, community organizer, historian, and entrepreneur was the keynote speaker for the month. The Helen G. Edmonds New South Lecture Series is held in March to honor Dr. Helen G. Edmonds, a member of the history department for thirty-six years. This year Dr. Charmaine McKissick Melton was the keynote speaker. Three of our graduate students also made presentations on some aspect of Dr. Edmonds' long career as a historian and public servant.
