| Graduate Student Jubril Davies talks about GIS to Shepard Middle School Students |
On Wednesday, December 14th, the DEEGS hosted 150 8th grade students from Shepard Middle School in Durham, NC. Students rotated between activities in the BRITE (Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise) Center and the DEEGS. Dr. Timothy Mulrooney talked about the study of geography and showed a demonstration movie on various applications of GIS. Graduate student Erik Green gave a hands-on exercise on the use of GPS (Global Positioning System) units. Students were able to connect to satellites 12,000 miles above the surface of the earth. Graduate student Jubril Davies gave a hand-on demo on GIS as students explored earthquake and volcanic features throughout the world. Students looked at both the map data that can be viewed on a map as well as the attribute data that can be queried and used by scientists for robust analysis.
