DEEGS Professors Publish Article on Food Accessibility

Along with graduate student LaDonna Brown, DEEGS Assistant Professors Garrett Love and Tim Mulrooney recently had their research on food accessibility in Durham published in the most recent publication of the North Carolina Geographer.  Their article, entitled “Using GIS to Address Good Availability in Durham” talks about the spatial arrangement of sources of fresh food against metrics such as income, education attainment, housing status and race.  While some correlations were found between distance to fresh food and these indicators, strong associations were found regarding the placement of convenience stores.  While low income neighborhoods may or may not have access to fresh food, many of them have access to convenience stores, which also serve as a source of (albeit largely poor) food.  Garrett and Tim look forward to perpetuating this research with local partners who see a need for this type of research and hope that students in all majors can see the value of how GIS can be used in their research.
