DEEGS Students Win Honors at NCCU Research Symposium

Undergraduate students James Holland and Edward Holley won awards at the NCCU Research Symposium held on the NCCU campus on April 19 - 20, 2013.  James won 1st place in his division for his analysis on existing air quality monitoring sites in the state to determine where to place future sites.  The locations of these monitoring sites are not equally distributed throughout the state.  He used distance, as well as climatic factors to determine where they could be placed.  Wilkes County, Hyde County and Bladen County were the best candidates.

Edward’s 2nd place award was for his work on mapping school shootings.   This is a monumental effort because data about this phenomenon did not exist in a single database.   Information was consolidated into a single database and eventually mapped using GIS techniques.  His map was thought-provoking and interesting.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone for participating.
