NCCU was well-represented in the North Carolina GIS Conference held in Raleigh on February 7^th and 8^th.  Graduate Student Philip Martin was awarded the G. Herbert Stout Award for Innovative Graduate Papers based on his talk entitled “Geospatial and Temporal Analysis of Seismicity in the New Madrid Seismicity Zone.”  He used GIS to show the oscillation of stresses in the Reelfoot Fault Zone in Southeastern Missouri.  Attendees were impressed at the ways Philip was able visualize locational and temporal data.    

Joseph Roberts won an undergraduate award for his paper entitled “Accuracy Assessment of Historical Maps from the Roanoke River Watershed, North Carolina.”  He looked at about 8 different scanned maps from the late 1700s through the late 1800s and assigned them real world coordinates based on the known control points.  He lined these maps up to see which was most ‘accurate.’  This talk generated a lot questions. 

NCCU students Roderick Mitchell, John Miller. Erik Green and Gene Squires also attended the conference.  This was a great opportunity for students to meet other GIS students, professionals in the field and potential employers.
