In aligning the NCCU’s motto of Truth and Service, the DEEGS looks to strengthen relationships by performing research that is germane and beneficial to the local community.  The DEEGS has offered training to those students and faculty members with little experience in GIS.  The DEEGS has done work with the Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Sociology, Social Work and Political Science departments at NCCU.  Our research looks to apply spatial analysis and statistical techniques to support some of the theories and methods presented in curriculum within these programs.

In addition, the DEEGS works with the Academic Service Learning Department to give NCCU a better of idea of the community which surrounds the NCCU campus.  All NCCU students are required to perform community service as a part of their graduate requirements.  This can help make NCCU students, staff and faculty better stewards of the community in which we live, learn and teach.  The DEEGS has created maps to support many of the service learning endeavors in which NCCU students partake throughout the community.

In addition to the location community, the DEEGS has facilitated relationships with the Durham Police Department Crime Analysis Unit, the Environmental Protection Agency and various local and national organizations.  Recent projects include:

  • Make a Difference Day Maps
  • NCCU Community Engagement Working Group
