Physics + Electrical Engineering: The 3-Plus-2 Dual B.S. Degree
The dual Bachelor of Science degree in physics and electrical engineering is provided through an agreement between the NCCU Department of Mathematics and Physics and the NC State Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Students are admitted to NCCU, where they complete three years of their physics curriculum before transferring to NC State for completion of requirements for both degrees over the next two years.

The Bachelor of Science dual degree in physics and electrical engineering takes advantage of several overlaps in curricula between the two majors, so that students take only a few more courses than required to earn a single degree in either field. Benefits of the dual degree include enhanced career opportunities through the ability to design and conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data and function on multidisciplinary teams. The first cohort of dual-degree students will begin their coursework at NCCU in August 2015.
Any student who meets general admission requirements for NCCU is eligible to participate in the program; however, preference will be given to students with strong math and/or science backgrounds. Students should declare their intention to pursue the dual degree as first-semester freshmen. The Engineering Program coordinator at NCCU will serve as student advisor for the program and will assist in designing a five-year plan for each candidate that will satisfy requirements of both universities. Students transferring from other higher education institutions may receive credit for equivalent courses common to the NCCU and NC State curricula.
The dual degree in physics and engineering is the only dual-degree program offered by NC State’s College of Engineering. It was created in March 2015 through a memorandum of agreement between NC State’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and the Department of Mathematics and Physics at NCCU. The five-year program is designed to meet the requirements of both universities and provide graduates with knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering in order to broaden career opportunities. The program also increases access, diversity and enrollment in a STEM discipline at both institutions.
Students must complete at least 55 semester hours of required courses at NCCU before being admitted to the NC State College of Engineering. A grade-point-average of 3.0 or above is required at the time of transfer. At NC State, students will take 48 of the final 60 hours of courses applied toward the engineering major. The coordinator of Transfer Programs at NC State will communicate with the Engineering Program coordinator at NCCU to ensure maximum credit for hours transferred. Students pay tuition and fees required by NCCU while enrolled at NCCU, and the tuition and fees of NC State while enrolled at NC State.
Students earning dual degrees will be extraordinarily well prepared for jobs in several capacities.

The Dual Degree student will be eligible to apply for graduation from either or both institutions at any point in time as they meet necessary requirements for either or both degrees. After completing the academic requirements of both cooperating institutions, the student will have been awarded a B.S. Degree in Physics from NCCU and a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from NC State.
