Neutrino Detector

The coherent elastic neutral current neutrino-nucleus scattering [D. Z. Freedman, D. N. Schramm, and D. L. Tubbs, Ann. Rev. Nucl. Part. Sci. 27, 167 (1977)] has never been observed. In this process, a neutrino of any flavor scatters off a nucleus at low momentum transfer Q such that the nucleon wave function amplitudes are in phase and add coherently. K. Scholberg and collaborators including D. Markoff, have proposed a new measurement of this cross section using the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge as a source of pulsed neutrinos [K. Scholberg, Phys. Rev. D73, 033005 (2006), hepex/0511042].
