Graduate Cover NCCU’s graduate programs have been developed with diversity and variety of interests in mind. With a goal of innovative excellence, the programs not only conform to the highest standards required by respective accreditation agencies, but are known for exemplary, cutting-edge achievement. Graduate and professional degrees are offered through the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Business, Education, Law, and Library and Information Sciences. The School of Business and the School of Library and Information Sciences offer joint degree programs with the School of Law: Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor/Master of Library Science. The School of Business and the School of Library and Information Sciences also offer a joint degree with each other. Several teacher licensure programs are offered through the School of Education.

Enrolling in a graduate program at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) will present you with an opportunity to study and work with renowned scholars in an intimate and nurturing environment. Along with producing cutting-edge research, faculty are devoted to facilitating the teaching-learning relationship with students. Indeed, one of the many advantages of attending graduate school at NCCU is that sound research does not replace quality teaching, rather, scholarly activity influences the depth of instruction that you will find in the university’s academic programs. We are proud that our professors educate and investigate by exemplifying what they expect from their students. In addition to the classroom and campus environment, they consult with business and political leaders, collaborate with researchers at other institutions, and spearhead service projects in local communities to solve age-old questions. NCCU scholars acknowledge the ills of society and seek ways to address these challenges by creating solutions.

Our esteemed faculty members model their dedication and spirit of service in their professional endeavors and creations. For instance, in September 2006, NCCU, specifically the Department of Criminal Justice, became one of the first charter- members of The Homeland Security/Defense Education Consortium, a network of teaching and research institutions focused on promoting education, research, and cooperation related to and supporting the homeland security/defense mission. Another example that illustrates service is !Hablemos!, which is housed in the School of Education. NCCU graduate students enrolled in the Communication Disorders Program provide bilingual and Spanish-only services to Hispanic children with speech-language impairments and to investigate bilingual speech-language issues. The goal of this unique program is to graduate speech-language pathologists with a bilingual focus and to provide currently enrolled students the opportunity to use Spanish and Spanish interpreters in a clinical setting. These are only two illustrations of how first-rate faculty believe in the power of applying their knowledge to solve real-life situations and concerns.

At NCCU, you will be encouraged and equipped to become 21st Century change agents. As a student in one of over 40 graduate programs, of which several are executive and professional degrees, you will have an opportunity to research as well as conduct practical, hands-on-training in state-of-the-art facilities. Working as a graduate research assistant in a lab, conducting workshops with teacher practitioners, presenting at conferences, publishing in critically-reviewed publications, and participating in organizations such as Graduate Student Association (GSA) are only samplings of how you will be able to develop both professionally and personally. Even if you are working a full-time job and taking courses during the evenings and weekends, myriad opportunities for you to excel and to find your niche await your arrival.

Becoming a part of the School of Graduate Studies will place you in an intellectually stimulating and vibrantly diverse community. Exchanging ideas and collaborating within a competitive university population, where over 20 countries and varied ideals are represented, will prepare you to participate in a global society. As an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) that is committed to diversity and excellence, we intentionally and enthusiastically celebrate cultural differences and how they influence prescribed courses of action. For instance, Master of Public Administration Executive Program students studied in African countries and performed day-to-day functions with key government administrators in order to learn about foreign policies first-hand. Additionally, students from the Communications Disorders Program traveled to Orizaba, Mexico, to conduct an intense five-week practicum with children and adults who had been diagnosed with various speech, language, hearing, and special- needs disorders. These types of real-life, priceless opportunities supplement classroom facilitations and enhance understanding of how culture may influence process and outcomes.

After completing a rigorous graduate program of study at NCCU, you will be prepared to navigate a terminal-degree program as well as pursue a career in your discipline. By becoming a member of an elite club of alumni who have benefitted from an excellent academic and social learning experience, you will cement your success. We look forward to your joining us in a commitment to making a positive difference in our global community.
