Sociology Department

Degree Offered: Master of Arts in Sociology

Program Description: In 31 semester hours, students will study advanced research methods
and sociological theory.  The program provides a foundation for the doctoral level, teaching at
the community college level, or working in government and business doing social research.
Areas of concentration include Social Institutions, Deviance, Social Organization, and   
Sociological Research.

Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in Sociology

  • Completion of a minimum of thirty three hours of graduate courses of which twenty four hours in sociology with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Major requirements include:
  • SOCG 5200, Advanced Social Statistics.
  • Two of the following:  SOCG 5300, Techniques of Data Collection and Analysis, SOCG5350, Survey Research, or EASC5120, Digital Graphics Information Systems.
  • SOCG 5400, Social Theory.
  • Fifteen additional semester hours of graduate sociology or cognate courses.
  • SOCG 5900, Thesis (Six Hours).

Required Standardized Test:  GRE
Minimum Admissions Requirements: In addition to an acceptable GRE score, applicants must submit transcripts showing completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning with an acceptable GPA. In addition to those with an undergraduate degree in Sociology, the program encourages applications from students who have completed degrees in other fields.
