Chemistry Department

Degrees Offered: Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Science (MS)

Program Description:

Small classes allow students to enjoy a productive and educational environment and to receive individual attention from the instructor. In 38 semester hours, undergraduate students take courses that prepare them for traditional careers as chemists as well as such professions as chemistry, engineering, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, biotechnology, nursing, and teaching, as well as to prepare graduates to serve as chemists and chemical scientists. In 30 semester hours, graduate students are prepared for careers in teaching, research, industry, and for entrance to Ph.D. or professional degree programs.  The Department of Chemistry is only one of twenty-two HBCU’s accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS), the organization that sets professional and educational standards for chemists in the United States of America, to certify graduates who have completed an ACS-approved set of courses.  Accreditation by the ACS demonstrates that this department maintains an undergraduate program capable of developing chemists and chemistry graduates who are prepared with a thorough training in the fundamentals of chemistry and their applications to modern life.

Required Standardized Test: ACS entrance placement exams and exit exams

Minimum Admissions Requirements: Applicants must submit transcripts showing completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning with an acceptable GPA.

Additional Admissions Criteria: None

Application Deadline: None

Prerequisites: The program encourages applications from students with undergraduate degrees in fields other than business.  However, for applicants without an undergraduate business degree, at the time of the admissions decision the program director may list prerequisite courses needed in order to provide an adequate background for the M.B.A. program.  The prerequisite courses will not count toward the graduate degree.
